Grandma Marian
Artist: Molly Keyser
Photography
I am happy to announce that the date is finally set for the opening of our first exhibition at The Eclipse Gallery! We had to push it back a little bit again due to our renovations taking longer than expected. You can stay updated with the photos of our progress on our Flickr. Renovating a 100 year old building has proved to be quite the challenge!
You are invited to the reception of Personality: Real & Imagined, featuring five diverse artists working in mediums including photography, paper sculpture, illustration, artist books, and comics. Artists include locals Molly Keyser (above image) and Adam Koenig, Justin Madson of Baraboo, WI, Liz Gresey of Chicago, and Sher Christopher of England.
Bring your friends for a night of art, conversation, and refreshments, on the evening of August 1st, 2009.
Free and open to the public. 5:30 PM – ?
The show will run from July (exact date TBA) through mid-September. So even if you can’t make it to the reception, stop by whenever you get the chance.
Thanks, and hope to see you soon! If you have any question or comments, feel free to email me at sarah@theeclipsegallery.com

Almost.
The renovations are going really well. But we still have a lot of work to do. I also need to confirm with all the artists, crafters, and designers who are wanting to be part of the “handmade design” side of things. If that sounds like you, email me and let me know what you are sending me. I don’t need it until late June now. We are about a month behind. Not bad considering all the setbacks we have encountered. If that sounds like too soon — don’t fret — I will be needing lots of things in the future too.
If you are an artist/designer/crafter whom I haven’t talked to yet, but you would like to send me some things to sell, go here to read our consignment FAQ’s, and then email me some samples of your work!
What kinds of things are we looking for?
natural personal care products (100% handmade)
hand stitched or hand dyed clothing for all ages
small, lower priced items like magnets, photo frames, etc.
purses, bags, and such
jewelry and accessories
handmade art/craft supplies (like hand carded/dyed wool yarn)
paper goods
ceramics and pottery
furniture
artist books and zines
children’s items
candles
glass ware
household items
you get the idea :)
Thanks!

I am extending the deadline for the 50/50/50 show, since I do have quite a few states that I still need artists from. I would encourage everyone to spread the word about this to artists, crafters, makers, designers, etc. Thanks!

I recently had a great idea for a new layout for the website, and I’m not a graphic designer by any means, but I used Mircrosoft Publisher to create my vision. It worked great, until I figured out that the home page images don’t show up in Firefox, although the rest of the pages images look fine (and the entire site works great in Internet Explorer)!!
So now if you type in www.theeclipsegallery.com you will get the new site, and to get to the blog you have to type in http://eclipsegalleryblog.com You can also get to the blog via the “about” page by clicking on “news”.
I hope you like the new design. I think it’s much more streamlined, minimalistic, and contemporary. If any of you know how to fix the glitch with the homepage/firefox thing I would love you forever! Thanks, and enjoy!

I just wrote a summary of Words of Wisdom: A Curator’s Vade Mecum, which is a book published by Independent Curators International. You can read it here. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read about curating contemporary art exhibitions. Whether you are a curator, an artist, or lover of contemporary art, you would find this book very interesting.
There is…much that is said about the fact that there are no set-in-stone rules about curating. This is a good thing. As [curators] Jana Sevcikova and Jiri Sevcik state, “Always do only what interests you and what you believe in. Curating is like any other art form: it only serves to express your relationship to the world. No objective rules apply: there is not even a stable hierarchy of values to guide you. The meaning of images is never anchored by any kind of objective truth. You must not fall for the illusion of such truths, and instead propose questions challenging your own assumptions and especially the norms of the cultural establishment…This is the only way you can develop new relationships and provoke lively conflicts for which there exists no common denominator.”

Jeff Badger will be representing Maine and the Electronic/Mixed Media medium in our upcoming 50 Artists, 50 States, 50 Mediums show. He has an amazing website where you can see his wide range of work including painting, sculpture, and even performance!
Jeff Badger, Surveillance Sandwich (Ham and Cheese), 2006

The sandwich is fitted with a camera in the olive. A motion sensor
triggers the camera to pan back and forth and flash the red LED
